Fractals of representation
Fractal geometry describes the underlying mathematics of chaos and organic growth but trying to comprehend its importance is a fractal experience, each glimpse leading to greater mystery. I felt that the role of the animated documentary was perfect for depicting this process of understanding. It could be completely personal and at the same time, universal.
The film attempts to express that mental state of being on the cusp between comprehension and incomprehension of the subject matter: to find the point where the mind can almost grasp infinity but, just as it comes close, it slips away. To do this I recorded conversations between me and two other animation students (with whom I made the film) on the nature of fractals. Their growing comprehension forms the narrative structure of the film, while the content is made up of manifestations of fractals that we found, made, or even, in the case of the mould, grew.
